Q: Is this class only for experienced meditators (or only for beginners)? A: The focus of our monthly meetings is discussion and group practice. If you are new to meditation, please contact us for information on periodic classes for beginners.
Q. Isn't meditation a solo activity? What is the purpose of meditating in a group?
A. A consistent meditation practice must by necessity involve many solo meditations; however, meditating in a group periodically can be very helpful. Many people find they can meditate better in a group. It is also an opportunity to support and encourage each other, and socialize (after the group practice) with like-minded individuals.
Q: What is Yoga? Isn't it just exercise? A: Yoga is far more than the physical postures that many people think of when they hear the word yoga. In fact, the postures (asanas) are only one of the the eight components that Patanjali, considered the foremost exponent of yoga, described in his Yoga Sutras. We will explore all eight components of yoga in our classes.Q: Do I have to meditate in lotus pose or on the floor? A: No. It is perfectly fine to sit in a chair if that is more comfortable for you.Q: I don't think I can meditate for an hour and a half. Should I come? A: Our sessions are 90 minutes total but the group meditation practice is a portion of that time. Currently, group meditation practice is about 25 minutes.Q: I'd like to come to class more than once per month. Do you have plans to offer more classes? A: This is a possibility for the future.Q: What style of meditation will be covered? A: We practice the Ananda style of yoga and meditation, which is based on the teachings of Paramhansa Yogananda.
